What is Epicondylitis?

Neo G - What is Epicondylitis

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) and Golfers Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis) are common causes of elbow pain, which can also radiate down the forearm. Both can be aggravated by prolonged gripping activities and result in inflammation around the muscle tendons in the elbow.

Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow) is found on the outside of the elbow whereas Medial Epicondylitis (Golfers elbow) is found on the inside of the elbow. Although the nicknames suggest that these conditions are caused from playing sports, they can just as easily be triggered by all kinds of everyday activities that involving gripping motions. Simple actions such as writing, opening a jar, painting or playing an instrument can all be causes of epicondylitis pain.

If you are suffering from epicondylitis the first thing you should always do is consult your doctor or physiotherapist.

Unfortunately the best treatment is often to simply rest the injured arm and stop whatever activities have caused the issue (although you may have to give up your favourite sport or hobby for a while!)

If your epicondylitis is caused by a motion that places repeated strain on your elbow joint (such as a tennis or golf swing) then changing or improving your technique can help to ease the problem.

Physiotherapy and massage can help more severe cases of epicondylitis. Your doctor may also recommend a support to help reduce the symptoms. A Neo G Tennis/Golf Elbow Strap can help provide compression and dampen vibration whilst an elbow support can also help keep the affected area warm during recovery.
